Player Rankings & Rarity
Version November 1, 2026 · Last updated: November 1, 2026
1. What a rank tier is
Every player on VirtuaLeagues who has played enough recorded matches gets a rank tier, from Sunday Baller I up to Icon. The tier is shown on the player’s profile and in the Rankings, and it is what VirtuaLeagues Fantasy uses as a card’s rarity: the eight rank families (Icon, Legend, Maestro, Star, Pro, Local Hero, Street Baller, Sunday Baller) are the families that pack odds, market quotas and rank rules refer to. Fantasy calls the Legend family “Legendary”.
A tier is a rating inside our fantasy system, not a guarantee of future performance. It describes how a player’s recorded statistics compare with other players in the same position group up to now. It is not a judgement of the person, and it does not promise how that player, or a fantasy card of him, will perform or be valued tomorrow.
2. How the score is built
Each player has a rankings score per position group (forwards, midfielders, defensive midfielders, defenders, goalkeepers), computed from the statistics recorded for his league and cup matches on VirtuaLeagues. The score adds up, match by match:
- The match statistics that count: goals, assists, man of the match, tackles, interceptions, possession won, saves, completed passes and clean sheets (clean sheets for defensive positions and goalkeepers only). Each statistic has a point value per position group — a goal weighs more for a forward than for a defender, a save counts for a goalkeeper, and so on
- Opponent strength: points from a match are weighted by the opponent club’s ELO rating, within a bounded range, so beating strong clubs counts for more
- Competition difficulty: the league’s and division’s difficulty settings scale the points, within a bounded range
- Form: a run of productive matches earns a small bonus that grows per match up to a cap; a quiet match ends the run. Points are never negative
- Position: a match counts for the position group the player was recorded in. When no position was recorded, his usual position is inferred and that appearance is weighted a little lower
- Where a site setting switches it on, trophy points from titles won add to the all-time score only
A player is rated once he has at least 10 appearances with recorded statistics across his position groups; until then he is “Unrated” and his fantasy card carries the floor value. His headline tier is the one for the position group he has played most. The point values and weights are set by the VirtuaLeagues head administrators and may be tuned; the all-time record is what decides a tier (eras are views only).
3. From score to tier: percentile bands
Tiers are relative. Within each position group every rated player is ranked by score, and his percentile among them picks his tier from the bands below (the percentage of rated players at or below him). Because the bands are percentiles, a player’s tier can change without his own statistics changing: when others improve, he can drop; when the group grows, the bands fill differently. In a small position group the Legend and Maestro sub-divisions are merged.
| Family | Percentile band | Share of rated players | Divisions (percentile · OVR) |
|---|---|---|---|
Icon
| 99.6–100top of the group | about 0.4% |
|
Legend“Legendary” in fantasy
| 97.7–99.6 | about 1.9% |
|
Maestro
| 90.5–97.7 | about 7.2% |
|
Star
| 76.7–90.5 | about 13.8% |
|
Pro
| 54.7–76.7 | about 22% |
|
Local Hero
| 30.7–54.7 | about 24% |
|
Street Baller
| 10.2–30.7 | about 20.5% |
|
Sunday Baller
| 0–10.2 | about 10.2% |
|
These are the bands in force right now; head administrators may tune them. Within a family, III is the highest division and I the lowest. The OVR shown on a card is derived from the player’s position inside his band.
4. When tiers update
- After every recorded match: when a match result and its statistics are saved or corrected, the players’ scores are recomputed at once
- Every night: tiers, OVR and fantasy base values are re-cut from the updated scores and percentiles (around 04:30 UTC / 00:30 Eastern), so a tier shown during the day may change overnight
- Head administrators may rebuild the whole rankings when the point values or bands change; a rebuild can move many tiers at once
A card’s tier can change. A fantasy card shows the player’s tier at the moment you look at it. A card you drew as a Star may read Pro next month, or Maestro — and a paid pack’s guarantee refers to the family at the moment the pack is opened. Inside an edition, a card’s live fantasy value then moves with the player’s nightly points under that edition’s rules; the tier is never a promise of value or points.
5. Fantasy values and your card
- A player’s base fantasy value is derived from his rankings score relative to the top of his position group, rounded, with a floor for unrated and low-scoring players. One coin equals one unit of rankings value
- Each edition then moves values per match night under its own rules (a capped change for a good or poor night, a reduction for a no-show)
- Your card shows your gamertag, profile image, positions, statistics, tier and value because you joined a league on VirtuaLeagues (Terms of Service, Section 7). If you would rather not appear in fantasy packs and markets, ask us through the Contact page
- Statistics come from match results submitted by clubs and leagues or pulled automatically; we do not guarantee their accuracy (Terms of Service, Section 11)
